The Christ the Redeemer was erected on March 13, 1904 to draw a dividing line between the Argentine-Chilean border and at an altitude of 3,832 meters above sea level.



It symbolizes the union of both countries, which were about to go to war for this part of the territory.



The Christ the Redeemer of the Andes is also located in the Cumbre pass, named for being the highest point of the crossing between Mendoza and Santiago de Chile. It is known as Paso del Cristo Redentor. But it is also called Bermejo Pass on the Argentine side and Iglesia Paso on the Chilean side.



This passage between the two countries is made up of some contiguous gates between the city of Uspallata and the city of Los Andes in Chile.

in the Las Cuevas sector, on the Argentine-Chilean border



How to get to Christ the Redeemer (Argentine side)



The town that is closest to this famous pass is Las Cuevas, on the Argentine side with 20 permanent inhabitants.



They can only be accessed in summer when there is no snow. Here, in addition, the temperatures in winter can reach -30 ºC.



From this point there is a very winding road 9 kilometers long that goes up one kilometer and leads to the Christ.



How to get to Cristo Redentor (Chilean side)



From Chile it can only be accessed with 4x4 vehicles. To get to Christ the Redeemer, the detour is located on the right side of the entrance on the Chilean side of the international tunnel. It can also be reached by climbing on foot.



Chileans must pay a return toll and fill out Chilean customs papers.
