It is not known who built it or why it was evicted, but the most important archaeological zone in the north, located one kilometer from the city of Casas Grandes, will surprise you if you are looking for something outstanding.
Abandoned some 200 years before Spanish missionaries arrived on these lands, Paquimé is a mystery to the most experienced and also to the site visitors, as the maze-shaped buildings made of compacted earth are absolutely different from those of Mesoamerican cultures. .
Upon arriving in the area, you will find several dwelling buildings, temples of worship, ovens for making an agave distillate and two ball games, clearly influenced by your southern neighbors.
The main features of the community that lived in Paquimé are the construction of the "T" door and the manufacture of ceramic objects.
As for ceramics, the region's most recognized potter lives in the city of Mata Ortiz, is Juan Quezada, who adopted the models and patterns of those made in Paquimé and was able to exhibit them internationally.
Location:
The archaeological zone is approximately 350 kilometers northwest of the state of Chihuahua and half a kilometer from the city of Casas Grandes in the state of Chihuahua.
How to get:
From the state capital, take the road to Nuevo Casas Grandes, 247 kilometers. From there, follow the signs, pass the old town of Casas Grandes and continue for another kilometer.
The objects that most distinguish Paquimé are precisely their clay containers; which are called the pot. This is because more than a single-use item, such as a jug, is ceremonial and / or decorative, so it would be more appropriate to call them vases. In Mexico, it is more common to call a water jug or other drink.
