It is located in an area dominated by different dependencies of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). On the south side, there is the headquarters of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and its new annex building (under construction). To the west, the gigantic building with pavilions of the Hospital de Clínicas ´´José de San Martín´´, a teaching hospital for UBA students. And to the north, the solid tiered skyscraper of the Faculty of Medicine.
In this block delineated by Córdoba Avenue and Junín, Paraguay and Presidente José E. Uriburu streets, the first Hospital de Clínicas (at that time called Hospital Buenos Ayres) was built in 1877, which was transferred to the University in 1884. The old The hospital quickly became obsolete as the knowledge of medicine advanced at the end of the 19th century and in 1895 the deputy Eliseo Cantón proposed the construction of the “José de San Martín” Polyclinic as a replacement.
The block opposite the old hospital on Uriburu Street was later allocated to this new Hospital de Clínicas, although the works progressed very slowly, spanning decades. On the other hand, in 1938 the Facultad de Medicina station on line IV of the CHADOPyF, current line D of the Buenos Aires subway, was inaugurated.
Finally, on February 7, 1975, the demolition works of the old Hospital de Clínicas began, with the project of preserving the buildings of greater historical value, a fact that was finally only fulfilled with respect to the chapel.
Plaza Doctor Bernardo Houssay is a public green space located in the Recoleta neighborhood of the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A project competition was carried out, and the one chosen was that of the landscape architects Pradial Gutiérrez, Aldo Maio Liberatori, and Román Wellington Peñalba; and the architects Raña Veloso, Álvarez and Forster took care of an underground parking lot for 1000 vehicles. It was opened to the public on July 9, 1980.
