After the Anglo-Dutch assault of 1596, Felipe II ordered Cristóbal de Rojas to build a defensive fortress through a Royal Decree on October 25, 1597. The architect died before completing his project.
The final work was not as ambitious as the one planned.
During the reign of Charles II, the chapel and the sacristy were built in 1693. This chapel is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the Immaculate Conception.
Carlos III in 1769 turned it into a military prison for prominent personalities. In it were American liberals and independentists and, in the 20th century, some involved in the coup d'état of February 23, 1981.
The Ministry of Defense stopped using the castle in 1991.

In this place, the leader of the Independence of Mexico, Mariano Abasolo, remained exiled from the new Spain, who after being captured, his life was spared sending him to serve out the sentence of 10 years in prison, dying at 5 years in the arms of his beloved wife. Mrs. Doña Manuela de Rojas Taboada, at the age of 32 years on April 14, 1816. She is remembered in Mexico as a hero of the country despite the fact that to save her life she betrayed other caudillos thus betraying the cause
The Castle of Santa Catalina is a fortification of Cádiz located in La Caleta and advanced into the sea on some breakwaters. It was built against the will of the people of Cádiz at the end of the 16th century following the plans of the engineer Rojas. With a pentagonal plant, the points that go out to the sea like a star are striking.
It is currently used for cultural events, such as those related to the Alcances film festival.
