The history of this town has always been linked to that of the sea. Nowadays it is a place widely visited by fans of angling and underwater fishing, where there are several schools where diving courses are taught. The splash of the waves against the rocks makes one suspect - along with the legend - that a good number of secrets were hidden at the bottom of this water.

As has also been buried in time its tradition of fishing port that surpassed that of Varadero, Motril until the 19th century. Few know today that it was where the trade ships that sailed to the American continent and other parts of the world docked, as it is considered that its cove had a better bottom for it. It was in 1841 that its port was granted second-class customs status, as local historians have spread in recent times.

One of the facts that are almost certain that it actually happened is that on October 13, 1805, an English ship, with a Spanish flag, entered the coasts of Granada, passing the castle of Carchuna and El Farillo to the port of Calahonda. , where he raised his true flag and began to cannonade the ships that were docked there.

The population center was established around its port. The main traces that have survived to this day were left by the men of the XIX century. It was also at the end of this century (1872) when residents of Catholic beliefs no longer had to travel to Gualchos to hear mass, when they saw their Purísima church finished. However, it also has previous monuments. The Zambullón watchtower is located on a fairly vertical cliff, near the road and in the direction of Castell de Ferro. The construction dates from the 16th century and its mission was to protect the mouth of the port from pirates. It also served to monitor the beach of La Rijana, crossing its fire with that of Llano de Carchuna to Poniente and with the Fort of Castell a Levante. It is made of limestone masonry and lime mortar. Many projects remained for the unfinished history of Calahonda, such as the construction of a new arsenal in the port or the union by means of a railway between the town and the capital for the traffic of goods. At present, its constitution as a Local Autonomous Entity, together with Carchuna, is already a reality.

Calahonda is a beautiful coastal town located 13 kilometers from Motril, located east of Carchuna.

It stands out as one of the most interesting tourist enclaves on the Costa Tropical of Granada, due to its magnificent beaches and its good conditions for diving. In fact, its very name indicates that it has the deepest and most transparent waters of this entire coastline.

Thanks to its privileged location, which makes it a tourist attraction, its population multiplies in summer with the arrival of thousands of tourists.
